These aliens, known as heptapods, have the ability to see all events, past, present and future in one coalesced moment (reminiscent of Trafalmadorians in Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five) which also shapes their language. The story weaves her professional encounter with these beings with her personal life. Louise Banks’ life as she is recruited by the military to communicate with extra-terrestrial beings. “Story of Your Life” is written from first person perspective, recounting Dr. Sure, heptapods already knew what would be said in any conversation but in order for their knowledge to be true, the conversation would have to take place” Instead of using language to inform, they used language to actualize. “For the heptapods, all language was performative. Integrating hard science with poignant story telling is Chiang’s hallmark and he does not fail to induce thinking on part of the reader, without any didacticism. Usage of the word “Your” in the title is multifarious, as it could refer to the reader’s life from the narrator’s perspective, or within context of the story, the “Your” represents a mother’s relationship with her daughter. The movie is loosely based on his short story “Story of Your Life”, an enigmatic title in itself given the plot. I was introduced to Ted Chiang’s brilliant writings after having watched the movie “Arrival”. “Those who know the future don’t talk about it.”
